Motivation is a real struggle almost every one of us can relate to (even if you’re in denial about it!).

Do you have those days where you feel so pumped up about something then some days you just feel like a total crap?

Or …

Those days that you feel you just need some kick in the butt to crack it all in?

Now, I want you to forget everything that you know about motivation because that is about to change, yes – right here, right now!

According to motivational speaker and former clinical defense attorney Mel Robbins, we need to stop waiting to ‘feel motivated’ and the whole concept of it should be thrown out of the window.

Mel Robbins on Why Motivation Is Garbage

She was recently interviewed by Simon Sinek on Impact Theory and her explanation is so powerful!

Mel Robbins’ Books

She wrote the bestselling book: “Stop Saying You’re Fine(which is awesome!) and her new book “5 Second Rule (the 54321 concept for decision making)

Key Points to Remember

“You only feel motivated to do the things that are easy.”

“At some point, we were all built into this lie that we need to feel ready in order to change.

We bought into this falsehood that at some point, we’re going to have the courage… it’s complete garbage,” Robbins said.

“One of the hardest things for me has been figuring out why is it so hard to do the little things that would improve my life?”

“There are so many people in the world who have these incredible ideas and yet we think what is missing is motivation,” Robbins said.

“The way that our minds are wired as human beings is that we are not designed to do things that are uncomfortable or scary or difficult.”

“Our brains are designed to protect us from these things to keep us alive.”

“In order to change — in order to build a business or to be the best parent — you’re going to have to do things that are difficult, uncertain or scary.

Which sets up this problem for all of us. You’re never going to feel like it.

According to Mel Robbins, this aversion is incredibly subtle. And it starts with another habit that we don’t like to talk about.

“We all have a habit of hesitation.”

“We have an idea and instead of saying it, we stop and we hesitate. Just in that micro moment, it sends a stress signal that wakes your brain up,” Mel Robbins said.

“You can truly trace every single problem or complaint in your life to silence and hesitation. Those are decisions.”

Motivation is Garbage, so Stop Waiting For It
  • Girl! This is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this!
I am about 15 mins in right now, and saving the rest for later. Awesome!

    • Hey girl! This is so remarkable isn’t it? Are you able to finish the whole video? 🙂

  • This is awesome! Yes, willpower and motivation are so over-rated, and daily disciplines and habits (no matter how you “feeeeeel”) are so under-rated!

  • Robin

I REALLY like this video – thanks for sharing!! It really rang true for me as a writer – when you take a creative pursuit from a passion to a career, you have to learn that you are not always in the mood to create, but it doesn’t exempt you from getting to work. You don’t need to be at the peak of inspiration in order to get your work done – it’s just a matter of discipline.

    • Heck yes! I so agree with you! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts I’m on the same boat and it’s really REALLY important for us to realize that discipline is the KEY!

  • Casey Lyn

This is amazing! Totally needed to hear this! Thanks for sharing 🙂

    • Ben Rei

Hello Casey! It’s life changing isn’t it? What’s your “aha!” moment? 🙂

      • Casey Lyn

2 things, one was the quote that “if you said out loud the garbage you said to yourself, you would sound crazy, and we buy the terrible things we say to ourselves.” It’s so true! Also telling us that we need to tell our brain we are excited instead of worried!

        • Yeheeey! I’m so pumped that we had the same “OMG THAT’s right!” moment 😂 I’m gonna use that trick to getting fit 💪

  • Candy Kage

Somedays tons of stuff gets accomplished. Others well there is always tomorrow. If I wait it usually turns out better anyways.

    • Ben Rei

Hey Candy, sounds great that it worked out for you! Sometimes we just need some rest when overwhelm hits the fan 🙂
